Cpu fan not spinning laptop

Thank you for supporting the work I put into this site! Generally, these passive power supplies are not preferred for gaming and high load conditions, because they can get very hot under full load and they also rely on the PC case airflow for cooling.

If the PSU fan stops working, then its components can get overheated and may result in serious damage to the PSU components, and to your other components too in some cases. Find out here. Nowadays, most of the mid-range and high-end PSUs offer semi-passive cooling mode for quieter operation.

These high-quality power supplies also come with a very quiet fan that is dead silent, even during full load and can easily be mistaken for the fact that whether it is spinning or not. Below, you can see the fan curve graphs of some power supplies from different manufacturers that include Corsair, Cooler Master and Seasonic. So, if your PSU does not spin during idle or during low load condition, and starts spinning at higher loads, then there is nothing to be worried about as this is its normal way of working.

However, if the fan does not spin at all at high load, especially when playing heavy demanding games or running benchmarks, then it is a sign of worry and you should take appropriate measures to fix this issue as soon as possible.

The fan can become faulty either because it is jammed due to dust, or due to hardware failure that includes worn out bearings or because of some component failure in the fan. In all these cases, the best solution to replace the fan with a new one. Yes, you can clean out the faulty that has been jammed due to dust and debris, but still, its performance will not be up to the mark and it will certainly make noise at some point in the future. You can easily find good quality aftermarket fans online for your PSU.

It is better to get a fan with good static pressure for your PSU for better cooling performance, as it pushes air with greater force. Most of the fans in PSU have a 2-pin connector, so you can either buy a 2-pin connector fan directly or can convert the 3-pin connector fan to a 2-pin connector by identifying the correct positive and negative wire. Generally, the red or yellow wire is positive, and the black wire is negative.

If the fan on your PSU is soldered then you can either solder down the new fan, or you can join the wires by cutting the older fan wires from the middle.

Note: Proper care and precautions should be taken while opening the PSU because it contains high power components that may have charge left in them, and you may electrocute yourself if you are being very careless. The main components that you should be worried about are the transformer and capacitors.

GPU Fan Not Spinning: Find out Why & How to Fix it

However, if you are being watchful and know what you are doing, then replacing a PSU fan is a relatively easy task. If your PSU fan is making whining or grinding noise then you can lubricate the fan bearings with a light oil e. However, it is much better to replace the noisy PSU fan, because most probably, its bearings have worn out and it will trouble you again, even if you have lubricated it for once.

Other reasons include loose connection of the PSU fan connector to the 2-pin header located on the PCB of the Power Supply or some component failure capacitor, resistor, etc. If your PSU fan is annoyingly loud right from the beginning, when you first bought it, then it is better to replace the fan with a quieter one.

You can replace it with Noctua fans, because they are one of the quietest fans in the market, and offers good overall performance. GPU Fan Not Spinning? Potential Causes and Fixes

Fan change options don't work either I always have it on cooler boost but none of the modes turn the fan on. I factory reset my PC and it worked for a while and then stopped working again after I turned it on the next day.

I also tried pressing the battery reset button on the bottom left of the back of the computer and it still didn't work. How can I fix this problem without sending my computer in? The fans stay at 0 RPM no matter what I do.

If out of warranty, simply order a model-specific laptop fan and be prepared to open and replace the fan yourself. Wolfey View Profile View Posts.

Sounds like the fan motor blew out. Fans are a mechanical device, they have a motor and working parts, sometimes they fail. I would call MSI and see if they can fix it under warranty.

The fan will need to be physically replaced with a new one. Seven7 View Profile View Posts.

This usually indicates a controller's malfunction either on the fan itself or in the laptop sometimes this happens when the oil in the fan boils overheating when not using the right oil. Yes, i have to start it with my finger, it was smelling burnt all the time and shut off fromoverheating until I found out I could start it with my finger.

Recently, my computer fan kicks up sometimes and just doesn't stop running. Sometimes it happens when I'm playing a mmo that takes up a lot of cpu, which used to be normal, but lately it kicks on when I hardly have anything running and have only had my computer on for about an hour or so. My computer performance doesn't drop any, and my computer doesn't get too hot, but I still feel a little uncomfortable that it just keeps running and running for prolonged periods at times, especially since it started rather recently.

I would just like to know if this is a serious problem, or if I have nothing to worry about. Did this solve your problem? Yes No. Sorry this didn't help. April 14, Keep in touch and stay productive with Teams and Officeeven when you're working remotely.

There is no noise or issue I can detect. If it clears, you have a bad fan. If not, then swap the 'bad' fan into a good machine to check and make sure the fan is good and start exploring firmware issues.

How To Fix Stopped Fan on PC [Super Easy Fix]

Hello Kelly, thank you very much for your post and tag. You certainly have gotten a lot of right on feedback from the other IT Pros here. Welcome to Spiceworks. Processor should not matter.

You have two variables, the fan and the motherboard. The MSI motherboards has all 4-pin headers. The 4 wires are ground, 12V, sense, and control. In a 3-wire setup 2 is modulated to control the fan speed and the fan just runs as fast as it can. Now a 4-wire fan should require the PWM control signal to spin, so plugging a 4-wire fan into a 3-wire header might not work. In your case, the MSI motherboard has 4-pin headers that can be auto-sensing, pwm, or dc mode. Dale Computer Services is an IT service provider.

With the system off can you spin the fan easily without friction? Have you tried using a can of compressed air to blow out any dust buildup on or around the fan? I would have expected a 3 year warranty to start on something that they refer to as "Pro". Swap fans with a known good unit, but I'm thinking you'll find it's the MB and not the fan with that error.

I've tried the compressed air and reseating all cables. I will try a bios upgrade. It's not just a fan but also serves as a heat sinc so I've avoided swapping. I would think any low draw case or cpu fan would work. If the fan were just burnt out, it should say 'fan error', or something like that.

I'm going to try and scale something from another system if I can find something with the same plug. When I turn it on, it spins strong and quiet for a moment and then just stops. I sprayed compressed air and gave a good cleaning.

Gotta love HP support. I figured I had nothing to lose and was going to remove the assembly to bench test. Turns out the fan is a separate part.

May Honestly just bought the same laptop, late November early December and until now the cpu fan has been fine. Two days ago it was running at about half the speed as my gpu fan turned the whole thing off shot some air duster through to see if it was dust turned it back on and now the fan was at 0. Started playing a league game after to test it and the fan came back up to maybe half of the gpu again but has since stopped. I did do that BIOS update to 1. Not really sure where to go from here. This is a common issue laptop users face.

But if you go through the correct solution methodsyou can resolve the problem in a jiffy. When you are trying to fix the issue, you can call a technician. However, you will have to charge him for that. So, why not resolve it on your own? Here I am going to show you the easiest ways to resolve the problem.

This will slow down your PC performance and automatically reboots your system. You can open the computer case and search for the fan and install it again properly.

Broken CPU fan also cause your computer to turn off all of a sudden. If you are using the broken CPU fan for a long time, then this can cause an issue. Along with that, it makes absurd noises when you start up your computer. If you think that the above-mentioned symptoms are the ones your system faces, then you need a new CPU fan to resolve the problem.

You can check it from the BIOS settings when your computer starts. But sometimes the BIOS does not show the right message due to these factors. So, here you have to open the computer case to check the connection between the motherboard and the CPU fan. If you find wrong or poor connection, you can fix it but always make sure that the connection between the motherboard and CPU is good.

So, through this process, your BIOS will display the right results and the fan will also work fine. If the fan does not work properly, it will put pressure on your system. So, tell us in the comment box below how your CPU fan is working after going through the whole solution process. Notify me of follow-up comments by email. Notify me of new posts by email. Search this website. My problem is the same as many others I have seen listed. Have tried all fixes listed. Power cord is fine, f10 will not start BIOS. No sign of overheating, capacitors all look good, am assuming it is motherboard or hard drive??

How do I check those? I was going to hook hard drive to another pic to check it, but can't find a cable to connect to the hard drive--it has a long connector with 7 pins, a gap, then 14 pins. Go to Solution. Also, possibly, the power-supply. It must provide several different voltage-levels on different leads.

Or, if there is more than one stick of RAM, remove one, and reboot. Try again, with the "other" RAM by itself. Ok, did that to check the motherboard, still the same problem. Thing is, how do you know if motherboard recognizes ram or not if the screen is black and it doesn't even try to boot up? Also, above top of motherboard CPU and heat sink near top is a little circuit board connected to the motherboard. It has a little light that comes on green when I turn the pc on, if that is helpful.

The motherboard deliberately does this, then detects the temperature of the motherboard and the CPU. If everything is "cool" pun intendedand the motherboard is functioning correctlyit tells the fan to slow down. Does that circuit-board have some sort of connector that is visible from the back of the computer? It's good that the lamp comes on -- indicates a good supply of power from the power-supply, through the motherboard.

Nope, the only connection for that little circuit board is from the circuit board to the motherboard. The light comes on when I turn the power on, so I assume the green light indicates the motherboard is getting power? I may be trying to make too much sense of it, because to me the power for the motherboard should come in at the bottom, where the power cord connects. No beeps whatsoever, with ram removed, with ram in, with disc drive removed, with disc drive in.

Just fans running quickly, and they don't slow down. So the motherboard? I am out in the country without close by computer repair, so changing the motherboard is probably really difficult? I have no problem taking it out, but all the connections to it, however do I keep track and put them all back correctly, lol! This computer is 9 years old, but has run perfectly all these years with no problems, so I don't want to give up on it.

It does, but one of the leads coming out of the power-supply is a pin connector, plugged-in to the motherboard. You will be able to attach it as a secondary disk-drive in the new computer, and copy all your files.

The same applies to your disk-drive. Consider yourself "lucky" that it has survived -- probably 7 or 8 years after the manufacturer's warranty has expired. Didn't find what you were looking for?
